The Walter Burgess Newport Running Camp Scholarship

Nominate a student/students with the following criteria: -
a short note from the student demonstrating interest in running and
participating in the camp
-
a solid academic record (meaning they should not ignore class work in order to
pursue sports, not necessarily that they are the brightest in their class)
-
facts about his/her running career (meaning interest, not necessarily the best
and fastest)
-
financial need
-
community service
-
recommendation from a running coach or mentor

Since its inception, the Walter Burgess Newport Running Camp Scholarship has
been awarded to seventeen recipients. Now in its fourth year, this Scholarship was
established by the Parkway Running Club (PRC) of West Roxbury
(click here to visit PRC's website) to honor a very
special friend and member, Walter Burgess.
Walter passed away suddenly in
November 2003 at the age of 40 shortly after having completed the Great
Floridian Ironman Triathlon. Walter was an active member of the PRC, the club's
Secretary and newsletter Editor. He was an amazing athlete in his own right,
forever working out either at the Y, on his bike, or running on the roads. More
importantly to us, however, Walter was an incredible friend and inspiration. He
was always there to run the slower members in to the finish line, to organize
the marathon long runs or group ski trips, to cheer others on, or to give us a
big smile after a training run or race no matter the length.
Walter was an enthusiastic participant at Newport Running Camp from 1994-2002.
The only reason he missed camp in 2003 was because he was traveling and training
for the Great Floridian IronmanTriathlon. He vowed to return to the camp in 2004
and never was able to do so. It is only fitting that a deserving child will be
able to continue in his footsteps.
